The semiconductor tesla transformer is a high-frequency high-voltage oscillator with a frequency of approx. 600 kHz. It is able to wirelessly illuminate gas discharge lamps and generate tufts of tips and edges up to a few cm long in atmospheric air. Via a modulation input with a chinch socket, it can be amplitude-modulated, for example with an mp3 player, so that its discharge tufts reproduce the modulation signal clearly as a loudspeaker, as they also modulate the air pressure accordingly. At a lower operating voltage without discharges, it is also possible to receive the signal both with a simple detector receiver and over longer distances with a medium-wave radio receiver.
